My Childhood Is Slowly Being Ruined/Made More Awesome

I think that we’d all agree that the Internets are a wonderful thing. I mean, think about it, you’re on the Internet right now, reading this. And if you’re like me, you probably have about 26 other tabs open on your browser, all full of great and interesting (porn) things to delight and entertain you (let’s face it, it’s probably all porn, every single one of them, except this one).

The things that the internet has brought to our lives really are enriching and valuable, in their own ways. But, some of the developments are a bit more sinister. For those of you close to my age (29), we’re having our childhood ruined. Either that, or it’s being made more awesome.

For example:

See what I mean. I can’t watch Reading Rainbow in the same light anymore. I just can’t. It’s not really an improvement and it’s not really ruined, it’s just different and life-changing. Jordi LaForge has such a dirty mouth…

It doesn’t end there, either. In fact, it only gets weirder.

Remember Peanuts? All those cold winter nights spent watching A Charlie Brown Christmas? It was always a given, a comforting part of childhood that would never be sullied. Just a delightful memory of childhood innocence.

Now, well, it’s different.

How will I ever stop thinking of Lucy snowballing someone? How?! *shudder*

Of course, 16 year old me, the one who religiously watched Clerks, memorizing lines and trying desperately to affect a New Jersey accent. I even got a job clerking a convenience store and encouraged my friends to hang out in front of the store, but that’s a story for another time.

The propensity for people on the Internet to take the cherished pieces of our collective childhood and re-purpose them is a truly odd thing. It’s like a language that we all speak, that is ingrained in each of our histories. Plus, swear words are funny. Always.

This, of course, leads us to this mashup.

That’s right, all of those childhood assumptions that Bert and Ernie are gay? Wrong. They’re just really close because they were always working on their gangsta rap albums.

Some people have far too much time on their hands. The Internet just amplifies the boredom in the most jarring ways possible.
