Former major league pitcher Dock Ellis died today. It’s a damn shame, really. The only major-leaguer to admit to be being under the influence of LSD while playing a game is no longer among us.
The story goes something like this; Ellis thought that he had the day off, so he hung out with his girlfriend and took some LSD. Unfortunately for Ellis, he discovered that not only was his team, the Pirates, playing in San Diego that day, but he was the starting pitcher. He rushed down to San Diego from his home in Los Angeles and not only pitched in the game while tripping on LSD, he threw a no-hitter.
While he isn’t the only professional athlete to take illegal drugs, other have admitted to smoking pot before games to calm their nerves, he is the only one to come clean about taking a hallucinogen before a game. We’ll miss you, Dock.
(Sure, this is kinda interesting, but I’m mostly posting this to get my Deep Throat post off the front page.)
